This project is all about unmasking the taboo around the cycle that the majority of the human population has. It has always puzzled me that even though women make up 51% of the population and menstruate about 40 years of their entire lives, it is still a subject that is not talked about, let alone showcased.
If we live an average of 78 years in industrialized countries, then it is fair to say that women menstruate a little bit more than half their lives. So more than half of the human population menstruate more than half of their lives... Why are so reluctant to talk about menstruation in a positive way? Why aren't we able to show menstruation in the media? Why we, as women are not comfortable to explore the one thing that we share in common? Why do men find it so disgusting? Why the media makes it seem a punishment? Would it be different if men menstruated?
While I do not have the answers to most of these questions, I do have a project that aims to unveil our eyes and put our preconceived notions aside for a moment. I want to show how different cycles are. I want to explore the differences that makes us who we are, and makes us women.
Through paintings, and art installations I am showcasing the cycle that is most common in humanity. The one that allows us to continue the human species--the cycle of life.
